As many of you will already know, last year I found out I have prostate cancer. This came as a complete shock at the time, I had none of the classic symptoms (still don’t) and generally felt well but a routine test following a minor health scare revealed the reality. 

From very early on I’ve been assured that my prospects are good, that whilst the cancer can’t be cured it can be controlled. Since the initial diagnosis I’ve been through lots of tests, 6 cycles of chemotherapy, and recently completed 20 rounds of radiotherapy, which despite my initial fears was not as bad as I expected. Nevertheless, the last 9 months have been really difficult at times, with some particularly challenging moments, not least having to tell Ben & Jess.

I know it’s a cliché, but being told you have cancer changes your perspective on life. I have certainly reflected on what’s really important to me, and thought a lot about the things I still want to do.  I also know that being as fit and active as I can be will help me in managing the illness and coping with any treatment to come. Finally,  I know I have benefitted from the work research and work that various cancer charities do, work that only happens because of fundraising. 

So, I have decided that I want to challenge myself to do new things, to test myself as part of taking every opportunity that comes my way and also to hopefully raise some money for those charities whose work I and so many others have benefitted from - hopefully helping to find a cure for prostate and other cancers.

In a moment of recklessness I have signed up to Prostate Cancer UK’s Football to Amsterdam this June - cycling 140 miles from Sheffield to Amsterdam. This will be the biggest physical challenge I’ve ever undertaken and I hope you can support me by donating as much as you can.
