Story

  • Over 2,900kms on foot or MTB
  • Over 172kms of Total Assent
  • 140 days

This great adventure began in June 1980 when Ashley, Mike, Simon, and I set off to walk the West Highland Way. Simon an experienced climber and mountaineer, convinced us we needed to take a day or two out from backpacking to scramble up some Munros – (Scottish peaks over 3,000ft or 914.4m as tabulated by the late Sir Hugh Munro). It was through Simon’s perseverance that we planned a day ridge walking in the Mamores mountains. I could never have envisaged that day would lead to so many more adventures in the Scottish mountains and the completion all 282 Munros forty-two years later!

The Munros are scattered all over the Scottish Highlands, from Ben Lomond in the South to Ben Hope 150 miles to the north. From Sgurr na Banachdich (Isle of Skye) in the west to Mount Keen in the east spanning 120 miles. A geographic area of 1800 square miles containing some of the most beautiful and remote wilderness areas of anywhere in Europe.

My journey through the Highlands has been one big adventure. I have
ventured out many times solo and enjoyed the company of family and friends who have shared some of the challenges and antics along the way.  Special thanks must go to Deirdre my loving and persevering wife, Henry my son, and my good friends and accomplices Ken, Patrick, Simon, Ashley, Mike, Eric, Nick, Janine, Dave, Maurice, Peter, Mark, Gavin who have all played a part in the adventure. I have walked, scrambled, climbed, camped, mountain biked and skied in these great mountains across the four seasons. I have travelled by foot and mountain bike over 2,900kms of wild country to summit 281 Munros in 140 days and in doing so have notched up 172,111 meters of Total Assent.

I am doing this in memory of my father who was born in Scotland, loved the Highlands and served with the RAF throughout the Second World War. He joined No 1 RAF Technical School Halton in 1939 aged 15 and spent much time patching up Spitfires and Hurricane fighter planes before joining the RAF Servicing Commandoes in the Arakan of Burma and Malaya.
