London to Paris Cycle Ride · 11 June 2008 ·

Its overall aim is to offer the hand of friendship and support to those affected by Myotonic Dystrophy, be they patients, carers or professionals; via the helpline, newsletter, website, annual conference and local meetings. Research is also funded by the Support Group.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fund raising page. Due to the extraordinary response of many friends, you will see that my original fund raising target has already been exceeded, but please read on.

Four years ago, two of our grandsons were diagnosed with Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy.

Myotonic Dystrophy is the most common inherited neuromuscular disease affecting one in every 8,000. It affects multiple organs, including muscle, heart, eyes, endocrine system, GI tract, brain, bone and skin. While some may only have cataracts, the great majority suffer devastating progressive muscle weakness which frequently leads to total disability.

There is no cure. But great strides are being made in research, and there is every reason to hope that a therapy or cure will be found one day in the not too distant future.

So PLEASE KEEP ON SPONSORING ME at £10 per mile, to add to the £3,000 that has already been raised for research, as I cycle 300 miles from London to Paris in my 70th year between the 11th and 14th of June in order to make that day come closer. I pledge to keep cycling to earn every extra mile that you donate.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure at www.justgiving.com/johnkelly1. It is also the most effective way to sponsor me: the Myotonic Dystrophy Support Group will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. If you prefer to make your donation by cheque, please make it payable to MDSG Research Acc: 00016215 and send it to me at Bennetts Cottage, Martin, Fordingbridge SP6 3LN.

Thank you for taking the trouble to read this, and thank you for your support.
