The Annual SWV Veterans Ski Week · 9 March 2020 to 14 March 2020 ·

In March 2020 SWV will be taking 26 medically discharged Veterans to Switzerland. With the help of specialist adaptive ski instructors, buddies, medics and support teams this will be the start of their rehabilitation back into employment.

Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am thrilled to have been selected as one of the Ski Buddies for the 2020 Veterans Skihabilitation week in Switzerland, run by the charity Supporting Wounded Veterans Ltd, and would like to ask you to help me raise funds for this worthy cause.  My role for the week is to support a wounded Veteran face the challenge of learning to ski as the first part of a rehabilitation programme to rebuild their lives after medical discharge from the armed forces.

The Veterans attending the ski week are supported by their Ski Buddies, who, along with an inspirational team of instructors, introduce the Veterans to skiing using specially adapted equipment (where needed). Skiing is one of the few sports which, with the right help and instruction, anyone can take part. The programme is specifically designed to enable the Veterans to regain lost confidence, and start to rebuild their fitness and strength. The week is just the start of an ongoing rehabilitation relationship involving mentoring, pain management and the searching and securing of training, jobs and work placements. The Charity has an unparalleled re-employment success rate of 91%.

My family has a strong military history and my late father was himself seriously wounded in action. Although he was extremely lucky in that he made an almost full recovery over time, I remember him being incredibly grateful to those who helped him through his long rehabilitation. Now that I have more time myself, this motivation, together with a love of skiing, means that I will relish the opportunity to work with this charity whose purpose is close to my heart. After many years of being lucky enough to enjoy the sport, I can appreciate how the mountain environment can offer life-changing benefits to the Veterans, both physically and mentally.

As one of the Ski Buddies for the week I have been asked to help generate vital funds to help fund the places for the Veterans and I am aiming to raise in excess of £5,000. I will be covering my costs and expenses, so please rest assured that this is absolutely NOT a free skiing holiday for me - we are constantly reminded how challenging this week will be, both physically and emotionally, for the Ski Buddies as well as the Veterans. We are simply there to help and support the Veterans on a crucial part of their recovery, and start their reintegration into meaningful employment. 100% of your donation goes directly to the charity and will therefore make a difference where it matters.

I would be hugely grateful for your support - despite undertaking physical challenges, I have never asked my friends or colleagues for sponsorship before, so I hope you will please consider making whatever donation you can!  Anything you are able to give - however big or small - will help re-build lives and is greatly appreciated to help this excellent charity get our Veterans back into mainstream life and employment. Here is an idea of the value of donations:

£25 - is a valuable contribution towards SWV’s Veteran assistance costs.
£80 - helps fund one month of the mentoring programme for a Veteran (covering travel costs to meet their mentor). Such support can take many forms, from the building of business plans and instigating lifestyle routines, to seeking the right professional or medical advice or creating an achievable ‘get back to life’ plan.
£150 - pays for one Veteran’s flight to the Ski Week, or alternatively, the approximate cost of 3 Veterans attending training/workshops/interviews.
£250 - pays for one Veteran’s subsistence and travel to attend the residential part of the Pain Management Programme.

The more people that know about Supporting Wounded Veterans Ltd, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends, family and colleagues.

Many thanks in advance for your support and generosity!
