Story

John Mouatt is a retired Civil Engineer (76-and-a-half and with a dodgy right knee) and is planning to cycle every day throughout the month of March 2021 to raise funds for the Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice.

Sue Ryder, like all charities, is suffering from the Covid 19 pandemic and a direct result of this means is that income from doners has dropped considerably, so John thought he would try and help by asking for sponsorship for his Cycle Rides.

John is a Volunteer at the Sue Ryder St John's hospice and also has a personal reason as his wife's brother spent the last few days of his life at St John's and the care he received was really excellent.

“Sue Ryder St John's Hospice supports people through the most difficult times of their lives. Our doctors, nurses and carers give people the compassionate, expert care they need to help them live the best life they possibly can. St John's Hospice opened 40 years ago after Sue Ryder purchased what was once the hunting lodge for Moggerhanger park from Thornton family. She turned the building into a state-of-the-art care centre for those living with life limiting illnesses such as cancer and motor neuron disease and now we care for more conditions than any other UK
charity"

One full day of a St John’s nurse costs £145 or £4,500 for
say the month of March (31 days)

John is hoping to be able to be able to raise enough funds
to provide a patient’s care for at least a week, but preferably, and hopefully for a month.

What John is planning to do, to raise funds for Sue Ryder

John has completed several long-distance cycle rides for various cancer charities in the past of 250 to 350 miles in 4-5 days, but of course doing another long-distance one is not allowed at present, so -

John is committing to doing a cycle ride every-day throughout the month of March 2021, come rain, wind and shine, (but not ice, snow or floods!), and he will be riding a different ride route every day, in and around St Neots locality and the surrounding area, being careful to abide by the current guidelines, and then logging them on the JustGiving website, so that anyone who sponsors him can see which rides he has done and the total mileage covered at any point in the month.

He has a variety routes planned and will doing a different one each day and be recording & logging these on his Garmin GPS and then uploading them to the JustGiving site. These rides vary in length from
14-25 miles and he will be varying the rides, to suit the conditions on the day – i.e if it raining hard, it will be a shorter ride! John wishes to stress that he takes the current situation very seriously, therefore he will not be stopping anywhere on his ride or socialising with anyone else, apart from his wife who may accompany him on some of these rides. He intends to take a photo of the milage on his trip computer on 01/03/21 and on completion of the rides on 31/03/21, to confirm the overall actual mileage ridden on these rides during the month.

His goal is to cycle at least 400 miles in the month, hopefully more, but this will of course depend on how many days he will be able to cycle – weather permitting!

John is looking for sponsorship, so please support him for this very worthwhile cause by going onto his JustGiving page.
