GEAAP supports young people affected by alcohol. Below is a story about one such person GEAAP has helped....
One 15 year old girl was referred by her pastoral care teacher who was concerned about her attendance at school and her very low self esteem. She lived with her Dad and had little contact with her alcoholic mum.
Sophie presented as very shy and quiet and outlined the current and historical issues that were worrying her. She had always stayed with Mum until the last couple of years when mum’s drinking became worse. She feels that Mum chose alcohol over her and she now has little contact with her, she feels forgotten. Sophie had previously had a good relationship with Mum and this feels like a big loss to her. We discussed addiction and how this can affect people and their families relationships.
She is now living with Dad for the first time since she was ten and feels that they have a lot of catching up to do, although she does not feel able to talk to him about her feelings.
She has changed school due to constant bullying. She feels this was due to her becoming
inward when her parents split up and she distanced her self from friends. She now feels that she has missed important chunks of school work and she worries about being asked questions in class. She now realises that sharing how she feels with some one she trusts can enable her to feel more in control of her life. She is now actively working to improve her self esteem and positive traits and she is now able to see how many good qualities she has.
This has also helped her recognise the things that she can take control of and of
the things she cannot. She is learning that communication is the key.
Sophie feels counselling has been a great help for her as it is a safe place for her to come and talk about how she feels with someone who will really listen and not judge, unlike some family members and close friends who she feels have disappointed her and let her down and in the past.
£40 will pay for a one hour counselling appointment to support a young person like Sophie
