Great Wall of China Trek · 10 October 2010

People who are deafblind have substantial visual and hearing loss which causes extreme difficulty with communication, information and mobility. We aim to raise aspirations and expand the lives of Deafblind people, some of the least visible and most isolated members of society.

Story

Thanks for visiting our fundraising page.

Along with myself as the intrepid deafblind person I have two guide communicators by the name of Gina Lundie and Margaret Tervit to ensure that I do not unintentionally  fall off that overly large oriental wall!

Deafblind Scotland is a Scotland wide charity that works to support adults who have lost, or are losing both their sight and hearing. Apart from providing information and resources to deafblind people the most important thing that Deafblind Scotland provides is the Guide/Communicator service - basically highly trained people who act as eyes and ears for the deafblind person.  The target is to raise funds to help them achieve the aim of seeking,

" a society where deafblind people have the support and recognition necessary to lead fulfilled and active lives in which they can reach their full potential"

I have Usher Syndrome which means I was born with a severe hearing loss and have a visual condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa also known as tunnel vision.  This condition is progressive and eventually all useful sight and hearing will deteriorate.  I want to see as many sights as possible before this happens and the Great Wall of China is one of them.

I have been with Deafblind Scotland since 1999 and am now managing a project called Touching Lives which involves training members to become trainers and go into schools to raise awareness of a dual sensory loss and to teach them how to communicate via deafblind manual, a tactile method where letters of the alphabet are delivered onto the hand of the deafblind person to form words and sentences.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Deafblind Scotland gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor us now!

Many thanks for your support from John, Gina and Margaret

                          Three Mugs for China

The China mugs are complaining

There’s wind and sleet and snaw

As they begin their training

To walk the China wa’

The Deafblind mugs are walking

Up the braes and doon the bens

To reach a peak of fitness

They might never reach again.

The mugs I hear are training

On curried sauce and beans

When they reach their destination

They’ll lick their chopsticks clean.

The China mugs are striving

To raise some needy cash

baking and racing and jiving

to give the walk a bash.

All joking aside, there’s work to be done

As they prepare to raise

to face the greatest challenge

that will ever meet their eyes.

Don’t fill their mugs with coffee

Don’t fill their mugs with juice

But dig into your pockets

And fill them with cadoosh.

Dig deep into your pockets

It’s all for a worthy cause

as the mugs prepare to walk the walk

they deserve a round of applause.

that they’ll ‘trek the trek,’ I have no fear

and what treasures they may find

and they’ll come back with memories clear.

in the windows of their mind.
