Story

Hi Guys,

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In June 2010, I am going to try and make a difference and am taking on the Cycle Zanzibar Charity Challenge. The cycle team will arrive in Zanzibar on the 6th of June and are going to cycle around the island. We will cover at least 237 kilometres in 6 days and for those of you who know me well you will realise that as the minimum temperature will be 26-28 degrees, at the very least:-

1) I am likely to lose my body weight in water several times over and

2) For the first time ever i may get sunburnt

A little detail about why i am doing this follows, but i am funding my own way out there and all the sponsorship is going to the Makunduchi Project: so please dig deep, donate now and forward this webpage link to anybody who you think may be interested. Thank you.

Jon

Zanzibar has a population of in excess of 1 million people. In Zanzibar the average life expectancy is 47 years, 1 in 6 children die under the age of 7 with the majority dying aged less than 2 years. Last year I had the opportunity to work with one of the consultants that set up The Makunduchi Project.

The Health Improvement Project Zanzibar was established in 2006 with the aim of establishing a public / private partnership with the Zanzibar government to improve healthcare in Zanzibar through fundraising and professional support in the UK. The Makunduchi Project formed phase 1 of the plan. Makunduchi hospital in southern Zanzibar is one of Zanzibar's two district hospitals. Many of the 80,000 locals previously had no or minimal access to healthcare. The project aims to renovate and equip the hospital in addition to facilitating its daily running. The rennovation work has already begun and doctors from the UK now regularly visit to work in the hospital alongside the local doctors and healthcare providers. The vision of developing high quality accessible and trusted healthcare facilities and services is starting to be acheived however much work is still to be done. Your sponsorship money will go towards improving the healthcare for the makunduchi population.

My motivation for involving myself in this project is not just taking part in the challenge, but also to contribute personally towards an exciting healthcare model and which will improve health in Zanzibar and may ultimately be transferable to other developing countries. Thanks for reading this far.
