Jonny and Charlie's Cycle!

Jonny and Charlie's London to Marseilles Challenge! · 6 June 2012
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
We are course mates at the University of Sheffield and decided that this summer we will take part in fundraising for charity. We chose Cancer Research because we know that everyone of us has been or is being directly affected by cancer.
We're cycling around 1,350km in under two weeks which will be very demanding, but definitely worth it. Our main checkpoints will be London, Calais, Hesdin, Beauvais, Paris, Auxerre, Avallon, Saint-Étienne, Avingnon and then Marseille. Staying in a combination of hostels, hotels and the side of the road it will be a fun experience and meeting the checkpoints shall be a challenge, no doubt! The costs of the trip will be down to us and no sponsorship money is going toward the trip itself. Any donation will be gratefully received.
Jonny: Cancer has been in my family for a long time and has taken special people away from us. There are a number of family members I never had the chance to meet or properly get to know, as they had been diagnosed and lost their fight against cancer. Work by Cancer Research UK however, has limited this from happening as often as it used to. Despite both my Grandmothers being diagnosed with lung and skin cancer, respectively, they both recovered and have resulted in me spending precious time with them, that before recent breakthroughs in cancer treatment, I would not have been granted. Life is so short, but we can help allowing families to stay together longer if we can find new treatments for the disease. Every one of us is affected by cancer, and unfortunately, one in three of us will at one stage in our lives be diagnosed. So please donate and maybe one day we'll finally defeat cancer.
Charlie: Cancer is up there with some of the biggest problems facing mankind, and affects almost every one of us in some way, directly or otherwise. We're not suggesting that the money this bike ride will (hopefully) raise will enable a breakthrough in cancer treatment, but every bit that goes toward that goal surely helps. Cancer Research was thus an obvious choice for us.
Personally, I have indirectly been affected by cancer, having lost both of my grandfathers to it, never having had the chance to meet one of them. A close friend of the family struggled with breast cancer, whilst a friend's mother is currently fighting her illness. This is not intended as a sob story, as frankly many people have seen the effects of cancer far worse than I have, but to highlight how prevalent cancer is in our society, how it affects so many people, and why we chose Cancer Research.
Thanks,
Jonny & Charlie
