Back in 2020, I set myself a personal challenge to do a sponsored climb/trek if Mount Kenya.  Due to COVID-19, the climb has had to be postponed a few times but it's now back on for February 2022.

I am doing the climb to raise money to support the work of Life In Abundance (LIA) International, the charity I work for in the UK. We are climbing to raise money for Mosiro, a Maasai community in Narok County, Kenya, The Maasai, in this area, depend on livestock keeping and a bit of farming but it's an area that experiences extremes in drought and flooding leaving the community without sustainable livelihood.

Moreover, cultural traditions have upheld practices that do not encourage socio-economic development such as moralism (a complex rite of passage from boyhood to manhood), female genital mutilation and arranged marriages. These practices discourage pursuit of education and overall economic development for the community resulting in high levels of illiteracy and widespread poverty,

LIA seek to address these issues through a pursuit of transformation in this community. Wholistic Transformation, we believe, is both spiritual and physical and LIA, a Christian community development organisation, was established to empower local churches to serve the poor and vulnerable, creating sustainable transformation in their communities.

We estimate it will take a total of £90,000 to bring about sustainable transformation in Mosiro over 3-years. I was expected to raise a minimum of £3,000 of which £2,000 will go towards the Mosiro project and £1,000 towards the cost of the climb (excluding airfare to Nairobi that I will personally cover). However, I have so far raised £2090 thanks to the generosity of family and friends so have decided to increase my target to £4,000 so more support can go towards Mosiro.

The plan is to scale Mount Kenya  up to Point Lenana at a height of 16,355ft above sea level. I'm told it can be reached by any fit walker, with no major health problems so I will be undertaking a 12-week fitness programme over the coming winter months. Some of the challenges of the climb include sunburn, snow blindness, hypothermia, altitude sickness, bouts of insomnia, headaches and decreased appetite!
