In 2020, I set myself a personal challenge to do sponsored climb of Mount Kenya. After the third attempt (not at climbing the mountain!) to get to Kenya, due to COVID and travel restrictions, I decided to pull-out from the climb that, finally, took place in February.
Having raised funds for the climb, I wish to honour those who sponsored me and also to have an opportunity to raise more funds so, in May, I'm walking part of the Wainright Coast-to-Coast walk. Due to time limitations, I'm only going to cover the Lake District section, apparently the hardest, a distance of around 80 miles over 6 days - an average of 13 miles a day over some quite challenging but beautiful terrain. I'm doing the walk with two good friends, Jamie Denton, and a colleague from LIA-International, Jay Muindi, who is coming over to the UK to take part.
The funds raised for Climbing for Mosiro, and additional funds I hope to raise for Walking for Mosiro, will support the work of Life In Abundance International, the charity I work for here in the UK and will go to Mosiro, a Maasai Community in Narok County, Kenya. The Maasai, in this area, depend on livestock keeping and a bit of farming but it's also an area that experiences extremes in drought and flooding leaving the community without a sustainable livelihood.
Additionally, cultural traditions have upheld practices that do not encourage socio-economic development such as moralism (a complex rite of passage from boyhood to manhood), female genital mutilation and arranged marriages. These practices discourage pursuit of education and overall economic development for the community resulting in high levels of illiteracy and widespread poverty.
LIA seek to address these issues through a pursuit of transformation in this community. Wholistic Transformation, we believe, is both spiritual and physical and LIA, a faith based community development organisation, was established to empower local churches to serve the poor and vulnerable, creating sustainable transformation in their communities.
In February, a team from LIA-Kenya and LIA-USA climbed Mount Kenya and raised a total of £52,000 for Mosiro.
