Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
25% of the total number of children with disabilities (CWDs) seen by Kyaninga Child Development Centre (KCDC) suffer from malnutrition. The biggest number of families with CWDs are low income earners and are therefore in most cases unable to afford transport to get to nearby local health centres or the regional referral hospital which offers free medical care and has a nutritional ward that provides limited services. Since the imposed lock-down, these families and vulnerable children have been left susceptible to malnutrition and its associated complications. They are unable to reach hospitals, health centres and markets to buy nutritious food for their children.
Most of these families earn a meagre income on a day-to-day basis selling clothes or produce in the market. With the temporary suspension of public transport, and a ban on non-food vendors, getting these foods to the market is challenging, therefore leaving them with no source of income.
Solution
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Uganda has imposed many travel restrictions, which are severely impacting people’s livelihoods’. In addition, inflation of food costs has put many families and
CWDs at risk of being exposed to hunger and acute malnutrition. Children who were previously suffering from nutritional deficits due to feeding difficulties and/or recurrent infections, are now in critical condition.
KCDC is providing emergency nutrition, medication, education and therapy packs, contained in a bucket, to their most vulnerable and at-risk families so that they will have enough to sustain them through the current 3-week lock-down. Dependent on further government action, this will be reviewed at the end of the three-week period.
Objectives – Improving well-being of 200 CWDs and their families during the current lock-down.
Implementation – Distribution of emergency nutrition, education and therapy packs
