Since my childhood i have felt a personal connection with Burma, now called Myanmar, as my mother was born there, and my father spent two years of his life there during WW2. I first got to visit in 2013, and quickly realised that with the subsequent advent of democracy that good quality education is the key to peace, and for the country to have the skills it needs to address the social, economic and political challenges it faces.
Since 2017, i have been so fortunate to spend a lot of time in this beautiful country and to work on a project that supports transformation of the Higher Education system. Through this work i also came aware of the great work the Prospect Burma charity is doing, and so have decided to do this half marathon to raise some awareness of their work and hopefully also generate some much needed funds to contribute to this work.
After 30 years of very little exercise apart from some walking, i took up running actually in Mandalay last November when i somehow managed to run around the palace walls. Now this will be my 4th half marathon of 2019 and i am so excited to be doing the Great North Run, and doing it with Prospect Burma in mind will make it extra special !
