Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my Justgiving fundraising page.

In 1999 I set myself the twin goals of 20 consecutive London Marathons and raising £50,000 to help the amazing work of Macmillan Cancer Support with those suffering from cancer.

Having passed £50k in just 18 years, Sunday 22nd April will see me fulfil the second part of this goal as I run my 20th consecutive London Marathon. This is by far my longest sequence of years for a single event and one I am immensely proud of, to have been fit enough to run each year, and to not be noticeably slowing up - last year's 3h39m was just over my 19 year average. But I am most proud of the amount I've raised for Macmillan Cancer Support which is the biggest factor in running the marathon each year.

Last year, with your considerable support, saw me raise a further £4400 (my best fundraising year by far) which brought the 19 year total to £56,000. I am massively grateful to everyone who has supported me over the years - the support gives me the motivation to get out and train in all the lovely wet and cold weather.

This year I hope to raise another £4000.

I have always run the marathon for Macmillan because of losing my Mum to cancer in 1989. This is the single biggest driving force behind my running but recently my oldest sister has undergone significant surgery to combat cancer and over the last 19 years lots of you have told me of family and friends who have suffered from cancer. I know some of you have lost loved ones, and some of you have suffered from cancer yourselves. All of your stories serve as new and on-going inspiration for my running.

I am overwhelmed by people's generosity over the years both financially and in the messages of encouragement and support. I couldn't maintain the enthusiasm I have for running and fundraising without this amazing support.

I have a revised goal of running for a total of 28 years, which will see me reach the age Mum was when she died - this seems a fitting time to stop, but there's plenty of life in the legs yet☺.

One in three people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point I their lives. 300,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year, 157,000 people die from cancer every year. Macmillan Cancer Support reach and work with more than one in two people living with cancer, providing support for them and their families.

Please support me and this on-going incredible work that Macmillan do as I complete this run. I am grateful for all donations, but as it's my 20th year could I encourage you to donate a multiple of £20.

I will post updates of training and photos on this site.

Many thanks

Jon
