We focus on the needs of vulnerable Ethiopians at grass roots level. Our partners know the context and solutions; we listen and provide appropriate support. Partnerships will continue as long as there’s a clear need and opportunities to make a lasting impact.

Story

Hi all,

So, this is a big deal and I really need your support...

In November, I will be spending a week in Addis Ababa, taking part in the Ethiopiaid Team Challenge along with 14 Reed colleagues. The team will raise over £15,000 which will go directly to the crucial work of Ethiopiaid's partners.

Whilst in Addis, we will deliver a training programme to Ethiopiad's local charity partners, providing skills to empower them to make a long-term and sustainable difference to the men, women and children they support every day.

Alongside the training programme we will also be taking part in the Great Ethiopian Run, a 10k event made even more difficult by the fact it's run at an altitude of 7,500 feet above sea level.

So considering I am not a natural runner (let alone in altitude), was blessed with an Irish complexion, and am well-known for being a massive softie, this is going to be a challenge in many ways.

Read on for more details about the fantastic charity and the local partners we are supporting, or check out the website (www.ethiopiaid.org.uk) and please help in any way you can!

Thank You.

About Ethiopiaid:

Ethiopiaid was established in London in 1989 by Sir Alec Reed, the founder of the Reed family of companies. Over the last 20 years, more than £25m has been donated and by enabling communities to develop independently the impact has been widespread.

Ethiopiaid is a small and effective fundraising organisation. We raise funds for trusted community partners based largely in the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa. Our partners are chosen for their expertise, skill and ambition that would otherwise go to waste without all important funding. They fall within three categories - poverty alleviation, healthcare and education. By targeting these areas we can help the poorest to find their way out of unnecessary suffering.

Ethiopiaid focuses on one country

Ethiopia. By fundraising solely for causes in this country, we are able to concentrate our funds in one area and use our donors' money effectively. Indeed, most of our 20 partners are located in the country's capital, Addis Ababa, and surrounding areas. This allows an integrated approach to help make a difference for the whole community.

Ethiopiaid breaks the "colonial" mould

Rather than sending ex-pats to Ethiopia on a permanent basis, we raise funds for local, Ethiopian-run charities. These organisations can make a great difference for very little money and are the means by which long-term sustainable change can be achieved.

The team challenge aims to provide a transfer of core skills – ones that we take for granted – that can help to provide a long term benefit for the charities we support. When we leave, we want to have left something meaningful and important.

Ethiopiaid encourages self-sufficiency

We give Ethiopians, who already hold the answers to issues being faced in Ethiopia today, the extra help they need to solve these problems for themselves. We don't want a quick fix. We want lasting change.
