ICS Volunteer Restless Development · 31 December 2020 ·
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I have been selected to volunteer overseas as a team leader with Restless Development on an International Citizen Service placement in South Africa for three months from 30th June - 30th September 2017. I will be leading a group of volunteers aged 18-25 and we'll be delivering school workshops and community based activities to a group of 10-19 years olds focussing on employability and sexual health. ICS works with communities that have specifically requested their help. It also aims to inspire young people in the UK and overseas to become active citizens who are passionate about long term community development.
The first part of my placement is a challenge to raise £800 towards the work of Restless Development and their ICS partners. The money raised will go towards enabling the overall costs of ICS in order to keep the programme running. All my direct costs, such as flights and other expenses are separate.
To raise money I am going to attempt to complete the National Three Peaks Challenge in 24 hours at the end of May. This involves climbing the three highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales which are Ben Nevis (4,409 ft), Scafell Pike (3,209 ft) and Snowdon (3,560 ft). In total, the walking distance is around 26 miles with a total ascent of 9,800 ft.
With approximately thirteen hours of hillwalking, no sleep and eleven hours of driving, the itinerary is as follows:
Tuesday 23rd May - Wednesday 24th May 2017:
5pm - Start Ben Nevis.
10pm - Finish Ben Nevis and start drive to Scafell Pike (six hour drive).
4am - Arrive and start climbing Scafell Pike (Wasdale Head)
8am - Finish Scafell Pike and start drive to Snowdon (five hour drive).
1pm - Arrive and start climbing Snowdon
5pm - Finish Snowdon, and complete challenge.
You can keep track of how I get on with both training and the actual event on my Justgiving and Facebook pages. Any contribution no matter how small will continue to make a positive change to the communities that Restless Development and ICS work with - not only in South Africa, across the rest of the developing world too.
