Story

Hello.  Thank you for visiting my justgiving page.

Last year I set myself a challenge – I decided I would attempt to climb the 7 highest peaks on each of the 7 continents.  I had tackled Europe’s Mount Elbus, Aconcagua in South America and Kilimanjaro in Africa as well as summiting Mont Blanc in western Europe.  And in January 2010 I reached the top of Mount Vinson, Antarctica's highest peak (4,892m).

The day of arrival we touched down on a 2km blue ice runway and were met with temperatures of -20C.  Then we set off on our challenge, me, 4 other climbers and 1 guide.

The scariest point was definitely when I was walking along the summit ridge; at some points my mask was completely frozen and I had a 1000 ft drop on either side of me!  There were plenty of times throughout when I wanted to give up but I just kept on thinking about the reason I was out there.  Summiting made it all worthwhile, and the landscape around me was pristine.  Four of the team made it to the top and I flew my Northumberland flag with pride.   With temperatures at the top a freezing -35°C and a wind chill of 15 knots, it was an unbelievable experience.

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me and helped me to raise money for the children's service at St Oswald's Hospice.  If you haven't given yet - there's still time!

Next up is Cho Oyu in Tibet in September 2010.  But I won't be asking for more sponsorship until the big one - Everest in 2011!

Thank you again - I really appreciate your support.           John
