Story
Just over 2 years ago I lost my only sister, Sarah, to pancreatic cancer. She was 44. She fought her illness bravely and never complained about how she was feeling or what she was going through. I'm running the race on 27 May in her memory and in the hope that, one day, with additional funding, pancreatic cancer survival rates can be improved.
Sarah's symptoms had been quite vague. At first she thought she just had a bad case of indigestion followed by a stomach bug, that wouldn't go away. By the time the diagnosis was made, her tumour was already inoperable. She died 6 months later.
Pancreatic cancer is notoriously difficult to diagnose and treat because it is unusually agressive. The symptoms are often vague and appear at a late stage, making surgery very difficult.
Pancreatic cancer also has the lowest survival rate of all cancers - just 3% of those diagnosed survive for 5 years. It is the only cancer that has seen no improvement in this figure over the last 40 years.
More funding into the research of this cancer is desperately needed.
