Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Derrick, as anyone who knew him will tell you, was an incredible man who was an inspiration to all. A charming, funny, handsome young man who brightened the lives of those around him, he went on to forge successful and fulfilling friendships, relationships and a career. However, a series of sad events including the loss of his mother and his premature baby son Max, as well as the fear of losing his three other boys who were all premature (and all also beautifully looked after by the NICU at St Mary's) took their toll on him.

With the unerring help of family and friends, and some dedicated folk who had themselves trodden his path, he was able to turn his life around and repay many times over the support he was shown through his own kindness, insight and selflessness.

Because life isn't fair, (and it really REALLY isn't), shortly after Derrick had his life back on track, was being the amazing dad and stepdad he was cut out for, and after he and I reconnected after 30 odd years, fell head over heels and got engaged, he was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. As ever, he approached the disease with the most unbelievable positivity and took every new treatment and every setback in his stride.

Tragically, just over seven months after our wedding, and six after his surgery, he died. No one put up a more courageous fight. And the reason he fought so hard was because he was so concerned about how me, his sons, his dad, stepchildren, and his friends and family would cope without him. Selfless to the end.

Before he died we talked about a charity to benefit from his life. The obvious choice was the NICU at St Mary's. The place that had worked so hard to try to save little Max, and who had also looked after Joe, Tom and Alex. A place that gives hope to precious little lives. What could be more fitting to the memory of someone who put kindness, compassion and hope at the forefront of his own considerations.

We love you. We miss you. Now and forever  ❤️
