I am one of the trustees of Newborn, Infant and Child Health Education (NICHE) International and one of the volunteer instructor trainers.  Our small medical charity relies on small grants and community fund raising like this.  We train local instructors to teach the Neonatal Care Course, a short course covering all the topics that are important for lowering neonatal mortality rates in resource poor areas of the world: keeping babies warm, care of the preterm babies, resuscitation skills and recognition and management of sepsis.

Whilst training front line health professionals in neonatal care undoubtedly saves lives, building up a faculty of local instructors of the course is more sustainable and empowers the nurses and midwives to make changes within their own healthcare system.
