Starting on 2 August 2008 I am taking part in a sponsored trek in the Tatra Mountains on the border between Poland and Slovakia.  This is to raise money for the Mountain Haven, at the foot of Mount Babia Gora in Poland.

The Mountain Haven was the brainchild of Sophie Lillingston (soon to be Mrs J Copeman!).  In 1992, she went to Silesia to work with children in the Zabrze Hospital.  Shocked to discover that by the age of four almost 50% of the children in the region had already started to suffer from various forms of chronic illness, she also saw what a huge impact it had on the children’s health and happiness when they were able to leave the hospital for a weekend in the fresh air.

The Mountain Haven, which accommodates up to 31 children and 14 adults at any one time, provides a pristine stay in the mountains of southern Poland.  During their stay, which lasts from 2-3 weeks, the children build up their physical and mental strength, regain their independence and learn once more to interact positively with others. 

Funding for The Haven is made entirely through donations, and the monies raised cover the cost of the children’s travel, staff at the Haven, food, heating, maintenance and medical expenses.  The medical staff are all volunteers and do not charge for their time.
