Marathon Swims 2023- 1K Challenge · 11 November 2023 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Hi all - I am swimming a 1km 'Swim Marathon Challenge' on the 11th of November at the London Aquatics Centre to raise funds for Alzheimer's Society UK.

In the brain of a person with Alzheimer's Disease, a protein called Tau accumulates in the wrong places. This Tau protein is also linked to other neurodegenerative conditions, among them are Dementia, Corticobasal Degeneration, and Parkinson's Disease - conditions that affected 3 out of my 4 grandparents. Research into Alzheimer's and the Tau protein will likely unlock further treatments for all Tau-related neurodegenerative conditions.

In addition to funding research, Alzheimer's Society provides support for people living with dementia and for their carers and loved ones.

Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
