Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.  The Medicines Development Leadership Team, Mike Hannay, Steve Burns, Fraser Kerr, Jon-Paul Sherlock, David Ennis and Paul Stott  are all taking part in a sponsored Coast to Coast bike ride on Saturday 18th June 2011.

This 136 mile bike ride...yes you read correctly, 136 miles! starts at Workington where the team will then cross the Northern edge of the Lake District to the Eden Valley.  Back into the hills they will cross the North Pennines before dropping down into the North East and dipping their wheels into the North Sea at Tyneside.

The team are cycling in memory of Gina Hibberd a former AZ employee.  Gina was tragically killed in a car accident last October only six days after leaving AZ for a new job.  She was 34 years old and had two sons, Lewis (11) and Ashton (5).  As if this in itself was not tragic enough, her husband Shaun has incurable lung cancer.  When Gina found out Shaun had cancer, she did not wallow or feel sorry for herself, she threw herself into fund raising and making the most of every moment she had with Shaun and her gorgeous boys.  Everybody that knew her was inspired by her positive outlook and tremendous courage.  The charity that Shaun has chosen for this bike ride is Wishes 4 Kids.

Wishes 4 Kids has been created to grant a wish for children and youngsters in Leicestershire who are life limited, terminally ill, have experienced life-changing physical or emotional traumas, have suffered major abuse or are diagnosed as HIV Positive. The Charity grants wishes for those of eighteen years and below.  Wishes 4 Kids has already granted hundreds of wishes for local children.

Sadly we do not have a magical cure for the suffering of these youngsters, however, we can bring a short period of respite. The time when a child has a wish granted is a moment that will be treasured by them for the rest of their life. It is also a time which parents will remember - that time when their child forgot the suffering.
