Etape Loch Ness 2018 · 29 April 2018 ·

Inflammatory Neuropathies UK is dedicated to helping people impacted by GBS, CIDP, MMN, and over 40 other Inflammatory Neuropathies. We provide information & support (personal grants, counselling, peer support), advocate & raise awareness, and help to fund & facilitate research.

Story

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare autoimmune condition affecting the peripheral nervous system, usually leading to temporary or long-term paralysis. Around 80% of those with GBS will make a good recovery, but between 5-10% of people will not survive and the other 10-15% may be left with severe mobility or dexterity issues; this includes my mother who was left unable to walk unaided and who is now registered disabled.

As a busy (and not as fit as I would like) full time musician and mother of two, I have signed up to cycle the Etape Loch Ness 2018 on April 29th, a 106 km closed road cycle sportive around the beautiful banks of Loch Ness with 900m of ascent.  There is a dreaded King of the Mountain stage, feared by all novice cyclists like me!

As an added bit of pressure (as if I need it) and in addition to the cycle training, I am also going to attempt to ski, row or swim 37km - the length of Loch Ness - in the lead-up to the event itself.

I'll post updates on the page as I (hopefully) clock up the kilometres.

I'd really appreciate any support, no matter how small.  I'm raising money for GAIN - who help people understand and manage both acute and chronic variants of the syndrome, raise awareness, and promote clinical and non-clinical research into these conditions.
