Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am running in The Great Ethiopian Run for Womankind Worldwide in November 2014. This is a 10k race in Addis Ababa, but not just any 10k, to make it extra challenging it is at 2600m! The run is the biggest (and noisiest) 10k race in Africa, with over 35,000 runners taking to the streets. My trip will also include meeting local partners that Womankind Worldwide are working with and seeing first hand some of their work.
Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in Africa and traditional values mean that women experience inequality in everyday life. These problems include the low percentage of girls that attend secondary education (less than 20%), harmful cultural practices such as FGM and early forced marriage, and one of the highest maternal mortalities in the world.
Womankind Worldwide and their local partners are working on 4 main areas in Ethiopia:
- Encouraging girls to stay in school.
- Engaging with local communities to abandon harmful traditional practices.
- Giving women control over their livelihoods and to protect themselves from violence.
- Supporting women and girl survivors of violence.
Womankind Worldwide has been working for 25 years to change the fact that everyday women and girls face discrimination, poverty and violence just because they are female. They work with local partner organisations in Africa, Asia and Latin America on day to day issues that affect women’s lives in order to make a lasting difference. The three main aims of the charity are to end violence against women, to increase women’s participation and voice in society and politics, and to ensure that women have equal access and control over economic resources.
