Every two hours someone in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone at any time and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help, supporting spinal cord injured people from injury to independence.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I began my love of swimming in my 20s as I never learned to swim as a child. I taught myself breaststroke and dabbled but it wasn’t until a friend asked if I wanted to do a triathlon I told him my swimming was rubbish. It turned out he was a swim coach and so he set about teaching me to swim front crawl. It wasn’t until 2008 when after a few glasses of wine, my husband suggested I could swim the English channel that I started to take swimming more seriously. After an unsuccessful solo in 2009 and unsuccessful 2 person relay in 2010 I finally hit French soil in a 6 person relay in 2011. Unfortunately all of the excessive training took its toll and I began a 5yr journey of several shoulder surgeries culminating in tendons being removed and rejigged. My surgeon assured me I would swim again but I would need to work at it. Undertaking another channel relay swim is the focus I needed and Aspire is such a great cause.
