RideLondon 2022 · 29 May 2022 ·

We are the largest charity dedicated to kidney research in the UK. Kidney disease ruins and destroys lives. Treatments are gruelling, relentless. There is no cure. We say this isn't good enough. We will transform kidney health. Kidney disease ends here.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am taking part in my biggest physical challenge to date on the 29th May 2022 and will be cycling the 100 mile route of RideLondon-Essex.  I might have entered in a moment of madness but the truth is I have wanted to take part in a big cycling event for some time to raise money for Kidney Research.  I had hoped to do something in 2020 to coincide with my 50th Birthday but it wasn't to be.

So - cycling is my passion, in part due to my Dad, Geoff Burden who was and is an avid cyclist, from touring all round Scotland from a young age to taking part in time trials and still cycling right up until he started dialysis in 2015 having been diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy in 2005.  He received a kidney transplant in 2017 by an unknown donor which transformed his life, no longer needing dialysis 3 times a week.

I did say it was a tale of 2 dads - when my dad was diagnosed with kidney disease, I was well aware of kidney research and transplants as my father in law was also a kidney transplant recipient.  I met Anthony White in 1992, 3 years after he received a kidney from his sister and he lived with that kidney working for over 30 years when he passed away in 2021.

Both dads received and my dad still receives the most amazing care from their respective renal units.  All the families are so grateful for this care.  There are still many issues even after transplant which need careful management by the medical teams and still so much research needed into causes of kidney disease and ways to help people live their lives either on dialysis or with a transplant.
