Mary Bishop 1927 - 2015

Memorial Service 1.00pm July 23, St Mary's Catholic Church, Guildford

Mary, born and raised in Guildford, moved to London in 1955 with her daughter, Julie (1950).  Her second marriage took her to Barnet where she became a mother also to Andrew (1959) and Jan, her step-daughter (1947), who pre-deceased her.  Always independent, she worked in administration in the council offices in Westminster, then for the Barnet branch of the Tavistock Child Guidance Clinic and later was Secretary to the Headmaster  at the Grammar School in East Barnet.

A fter the death of her second husband in 1983 Mary moved back to her beloved birthplace to be near her father, local identity Ted Style, and brothers, Tony and Paul, and to make a new life in her cottage on Wood Street Green.  From here she took up employment in the Linguistics department of The University of Surrey and later in admin at Tescos.

Always active in the local community, she was a member of the horticultural society and as a gifted artist she organised a painting group that soon became very popular. She was a volunteer coordinator for Fairwood Helpers  and worked  in the gift shop of St Mary's Church in Broad Street, where she enjoyed the company of her friends.

She dearly missed her son and daughter who live abroad, but had fantastically close relationships with her brothers.  After Tony died, she and Paul, together with his wife Sarah, became the closest siblings you could imagine.

Mary suffered from memory loss for several years before suffering a serious stroke on 24 April.  After a few weeks in hospital, she passed away peacefully at Dene Place Nursing Home on the morning of July 6.  She will be very much missed by all who had the fortune to know her.

Please donate generously to the Dementia Society in order to support other families in the same situation.
