Story
Two years ago I heard about Alan Melrose of 'Walk Deeside' taking groups of walkers up Kili. I thought it sounded a fantastic challenge! So........on 17.02.10 I will be leaving the UK, traveling via Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro. On 19.02.10 I will commence my climb up the mountain. Not bad for a girl turning 50 this year. My emotions are mixed, excitement and fear but one things for sure I will be trying my hardest to make it to the summit. I will be honoured to be climbing in memory of my son Cameron who, during his short life, was both determind and brave.
Cameron suffered from a rare genetic disorder FOP. Research has advanced greatly over the last 10 years and I hope a cure can be found very soon. For more info visit www.ifopa.org.
Kilimanjaro Conquered!!! I Reached the Roof of Africa!!!
Firstly and most importantly, I have to say a massive thank you for all the support and encouragement I received before, during and after the climb. I have no doubt that this kept me focused and determined to achieve my goal. All of your donations and best wishes have left me overwhelmed and I cannot emphasise how grateful I am. I am sure your generosity will also be of equal importance to Nuffield.
So once again, THANK YOU!
The first few days of the climb were relaxed and steady, as I was captivated by Africa's charm and reassured by the high spirits of the guides. As I reached the final ascent, the scale of the challenge began to kick in. At this point it was important for the walking group and guides to work as a team to maintain determination and morale.
The challenge that the overall climb represented made reaching the summit seem like an even greater achievement and made the whole effort more rewarding. The experience I received from my time in Africa is something I must recommend to anyone.
