Coeliac UK is the expert on coeliac disease and the gluten free diet. We are an independent charity funding critical research, providing trustworthy advice, support, and fighting for better availability of gluten free food. And we do it all so that one day, no one’s life will be limited by gluten.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease that results in intolerance to gluten. Gluten is present in wheat, barley, rye and oats and as a result anything made from derivatives thereof.

The long term effect of ingesting gluten for sufferers of Coeliac disease include mal-absorption causing serious nutritional deficiencies, osteoporosis and a heightened likelihood of gut lymphoma. There is a vast array of other unpleasant side effects too. The only method of controlling the condition is to totally exclude gluten from ones diet – no breads, no pasta, no pastry, biscuits or cakes; nor anything that may be cross contaminated such as chips fried in the same oil as batter - the list is very long. There can be no cheating on the diet. It is not like an allergy where the effects are immediate and transient. It is a lifetime condition and currently there is no cure. Happily, alternative gluten free products are becoming more widely available.

Roughly one in a thousand people are diagnosed with Coeliac disease but it is estimated that one in a hundred people actually suffer from it. The majority remain undiagnosed and at risk. The Coeliac Society contributes hugely to research into the disease, the possibility of finding a cure and raising public awareness. Many undiagnosed sufferers who probably have not even heard of the disease could prevent later misery in life with a very small amount of knowledge.

Coeliac Disease is often thought to be an allergy, or avoiding gluten a lifestyle choice.  But you really couldn't be more wrong.  Coeliac Disease affected my grandmother, and mother who were both diagnosed late in life.  Early diagnosis is the key to avoiding autoimmune damage and increasing awareness of the symptoms is the only way forward.  I hope that my helping me raise money for the charity you'll assist in that.
