KamuliFriends supports Kamuli Mission Hospital in Uganda by raising funds for capital projects, medical equipment and operations and encouraging volunteers both medical and non medical to spend time at the hospital.

Story

Hello.

We are a group of 4 medical students (Laura, Bex, Steve, and Charlie) in our final year of study at University of Manchester, about to go on our medical elective to Kamuli, Uganda.

We need your help!

We have all self-funded our electives to Uganda and would like to take advantage of this opportunity to take some charitable donations directly to the point of need, usually donations take a considerable (30%) cut along the way. The hospital relies heavily on volunteers and charitable donations, which is why we are asking you for help. Even a small donation can help to buy clean bedding and towels, or to fund much-needed medical equipment. There are many ongoing projects at the Kamuli Hospital, that we are hoping to help fund, such as the solar panel project to help the hospital  become self sufficient.

Kamuli Mission Hospital:

Kamuli Mission Hospital was founded as a not-for-profit hospital by nuns in 1914 to offer maternity care for the local women. Since then it has expanded to serve a population of 750,000 people, with 160 beds and wards for surgery, medicine, paediatrics and maternity. The hospital is based in a poor, rural area and money is always very limited. Patients have to make a small contribution to their care but many cannot afford to even do this; there is daily pressure between raising enough money for the hospital to continue running and making the healthcare available to everyone. Retention of trained staff is also a constant problem: there are only ever between 2 and 5 doctors working there who, with a dedicated team of nurses and midwives, do an incredible job in such difficult conditions.

Finally... Thank you all. Leave us your name and address and we shall try send you a postcard to show you what your donations mean to Kamuli Hospital.
