I went out to Uganda in 2008. Not long after I returned, the charity Children of Masindi was founded. We support children with disabilities in an inclusive primary school in Masindi, Uganda.
80kms from Masindi is the Budongo Forest which I have visited a few times. I realised that not many local people including children get the opportunity to visit the Forest mainly due to costs. Most are unaware of its existence. Yet the Forest is part of their natural heritage and is under threat from deforestation for crops and other demands.
I have often thought how amazing it would be to take a group of children into the Forest to see it’s beauty to learn about how important it is.
We plan to take over 100 local children from the Kamurasi Primary School, including children with disabilities, into the Forest. The children will learn about the Forest and the 24 species of mammals that live there, including a population of chimpanzees. They will see the Mahogany trees that the Forest is famous for. They will also learn about the incredible numbers of birds and butterflies that the Forest sustains.
Through this experience the children will find out how important the Forest is and why it needs protecting for generations to come.
We are raising money for the trip to pay for the transport to get there, for guides to educate and take the children into the Forest in small groups and money for food and drink throughout the trip. We also want to plant some trees in the Forest in agreement with the Forest guides.
