Great Wall of China Trek · 6 September 2019 to 15 September 2019 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Alzheimer’s Society is relentless in supporting those with dementia and their families. Until a cure is found, their work is the cornerstone of so many people’s lives.

My fab daughter-in-law, Louise Barden, and I are on a mission to help them.

Over 10 days in September we face what organisers describe as a 'physically demanding challenge' on world wonder, The Great Wall of China. Not the whole 10,000 miles, mercifully, but renovated and unrestored sections of the staggering 2,000-year-old structure.

Every step, hour and day will be in memory of Avril McHale, my lovely mum.

She treasured life, her family, friends, home and all things bright and beautiful.

With an infectious laugh and wicked sense of humour, Avril was thoughtful, kind and generous beyond words. People adored her warmth and friendship. We just loved being loved by her.

Five years ago, we suffered a shattering blow. Mum was diagnosed with vascular dementia. Five years, we were told. And it was just about that.

Sixty months and over those 420 days we gradually lost her to the harsh cruelty of this crippling condition as it strangled and destroyed everything she – and we – held dear.

Alzheimer's Society is there for people like Avril and families like ours. Please help me support them by sponsoring me in this epic event.

Huge thanks for any help you can give.
