Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Many people have pre-conceptions about dementia, and often, it is only when someone is personally affected that they begin to find out about it.
Dementia has had a profound impact upon our family. During the last 8 years we have lost two very dear family members. Alma who succumbed to the effects of vascular dementia in a matter of months, she had been the driving force in the family, and Kingsley, university educated, fluent in Hebrew who had held a commissioned rank in the armed forces. He deteriorated to such an extent both mentally and physically that ultimately he couldn't even recognise family members.
Just over a year ago I volunteered in a project undertaken by Kings College London. The PROTECT Study which gathers data and supports innovative research to improve our understanding of the ageing brain and why people develop dementia.
Did you know that:
3% of the population will have dementia by 2051.
Only £90 is spent on dementia research per patient annually.
Dementia was the leading cause of death for women in England and Wales in 2014
One in three people over 65 will of a dementia related illness
In 2013, I ran a marathon in memory of Alma. I now dedicate this walk to Kingsley nx
