Thames Bridges Trek 2023 · 9 September 2023 to 10 September 2023 ·

Our charity has been established to provide respite for young carers who miss out on the same opportunities as other children because they are carers to family members who are disabled or chronically ill , we offer them a chance of a holiday of a life time to Disney World in Florida.

Story

We are a group of friends that are taking part in a 25km walk by completing the Thames Walk Trek. The Team will be Claire, Rich, Kelly, Dave, Karen, Colin, Becky and Scott.

I will only be walking small parts of this and being pushed in a wheelchair for the rest as I am still recovering from breaking my hip I will make the finish line some how. Colin will be pushing my wheelchair with a bit of help from the rest of the group, this walk was booked before my fall and I don’t want to pull out of this chance to earn some money for this great cause, so this is the best I am able to do.

This is to raise money for The Diamond Kite Foundation. To relieve the needs of young carers and their families through the provision of a respite holiday of a lifetime. It is estimated that there are about 800,000 young carers in the UK. Being a young carer often means looking after a family member who is disabled, chronically ill or has a mental health condition. 27% of young carers aged 5-18 regularly miss time at school. These carers are often required to grow up far too early which can lead to them missing out on some of the same opportunities as other children. Many of these young carers are not only losing their childhood but they are all too often victims of bullying and exclusion which sadly, could in turn have a negative impact on their lives. The Diamond Kite Foundation hopes to provide much needed respite for these young people with a chance of a holiday of a lifetime to Disney World in Florida, USA with other children experiencing the same things in their lives, provide an opportunity to make new friends and help them build a network of support.
