We train amazing hearing dogs to transform the lives of deaf people

Story

For the next 12 weeks I am going to give up my love affair with the local coffee shop! Anyone that knows me knows I love coffee and I love cake. I am willing to forgo my weekly treat for a Charity I feel very passionate about.

Some of you will already know that I worked in mainstream education supporting Deaf children, a role that I adored. ‘My kids’ are some of the most courageous people I have met, and they are the reason why I have a little heart tattooed behind my ear. My choice of charity is in admiration of their bravery. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People train dogs to assist Deaf people in their daily lives, giving them additional support to live fully independent lives. Not only do these truly amazing dogs alert Deaf people to sounds they would otherwise miss, they also provide companionship. Deafness can be an isolating disability and a hearing dog can give a sense of freedom and confidence that reduces the alienation too often felt.

For those of you who are animal lovers you will understand the unconditional love that a pet provides. They do not care if your hair is unwashed and you’re still wearing yesterday’s t-shirt, they just love you. If you’re not an animal lover - ask the cat owner searching for ‘Tiddles’ at 2am, or the dog owner picking up poo in your local park. They will tell you how frustratingly wonderful and rewarding their animals are.

If you feel during the next 12 weeks you too could sacrifice the occasional coffee I would really appreciate your support. If coffee is not
your thing - how about a bottle of coke, a beer or even a glass of wine?  I will be the first to hold my hand up and admit that wine was a step too far in my book.

Much love

Karie xx
