Story
The Women's Prison Association (WPA) is an organization that I've proudly supported over my last 10 years in NYC. I'm proud to be running for them in 2022 and hope you can help by donating whatever amount you can. Here's a little bit more about the important and incredibly necessary work WPA do:
WPA's mission is to empower women to redefine their lives in the face of injustice and incarceration.
They take a personal approach to helping women impacted by the criminal system by addressing root causes at the heart of system involvement. Ultimately, envisioning a society where our reliance on incarceration has been replaced by constructive, community-driven responses.
Some of the specific issues women involved in the criminal legal system face which WPA helps with:
regaining custody of their children,
Most incarcerated women are mothers, and frequently the primary caretakers of their children.
securing safe and stable housing for themselves and their families,
- Women returning home (especially women of color) have much higher rates of homelessness compared to men.
securing meaningful employment,
- Women returning home (especially women of color) face more employment disadvantages than men despite being more likely to be looking for jobs.
- The trauma experienced by children when separated from a parent cannot be overstated.
