The picture below is of a wonderful, brave little girl called Eliza, who lives in North Berwick and is nearly 5 years old. After a seemingly normal start to her life, she was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome in June 2014. Rett syndrome is a rare genetic condition which affects 1 in 10,000 girls born worldwide.
It has meant that Eliza’s normal development as a child not only stopped, but actually regressed; she is now unable to do things that she could previously do. She once said normal words like ‘mama’ and ‘bye bye’, but now she says no words at all. She is unable to wave and to point and simply can’t communicate with the outside world.
Most girls with the condition will develop seizures after the age of 5, some suffering several seizures a day. After years of intense physiotherapy Eliza has recently taken her first steps, however it is unlikely she will progress much further. Despite all this, one thing Eliza does have is a wonderful smile as you can see from the picture!
There is hope for Eliza though, we think a cure is possible in Eliza’s lifetime! Scientists in Edinburgh have already managed to reverse the condition under lab conditions but more funding is needed to progress this further.
Please donate to the cause- we have hope for Eliza and for every other child affected by Rett syndrome- lets reverse it.
