Virgin London Marathon 2012 · 22 April 2012 ·

As the East Midlands’ only hospice for children and young people, we brighten the short lives of babies, children and young people who come to Rainbows. We want them to have fun and make special memories. We are also here to support their loved ones through the most difficult times of their lives.

Story

After crossing the finishing line at the London Marathon last April, I vowed that it was my first and last ever marathon. But here I am in 2012 with only a few weeks to go before I don my running shoes again for another 26.2 mile jaunt around our capital city!
As some of you know my dad died suddenly last September and I want to do this in his memory. It has spurred me on to train harder and more regularly to beat my time of last year and whenever it gets painful and tough I think of him and it gets me through. I crossed the line in 4 hours 8 minutes last April and this year I am hoping to get under the 4 hour mark. I have enlisted the help of a friend who has put together a training programme for me and every Sunday Robin is out with me encouraging me up the hills!
I managed to get my place through my running club – Leicester Coritanians and so I am not beholden to raise money for any one charity. However, I would like to raise money for a local charity that my dad supported through his company Advance Tapes. This is the Rainbows Hospice, a hospice dedicated to meeting the needs of the children and young people from the East Midlands who are all affected by life-limiting and life-threatening conditions.
I am also hoping to raise a small amount to put towards a bench in my dad’s memory which will be put in the centre of the village of Old Dalby where he lived for over 40 years and I also lived for 20 years. My dad loved the village and dedicated much of his spare time to setting up clubs, organising Old Dalby Day and much more and he leaves behind a great legacy. For every minute I get under my time of last year Robin is going to give £5 towards the bench – this will hopefully spur me on over the last few painful miles.
I would be most grateful if you could spare a few pounds to help this great cause and make my 26.2 miles that little bit easier!
