This June I'll be travelling to Uganda with 5 other young people with Glasgow Straight Talk. We will be teaching sex education and HIV prevention in secondary schools for 5 weeks.

Glasgow Straight Talk is a student run charity which is committed to reducing HIV/AIDS prevalence in Uganda through educational workshops in schools. We also provide education on other topics which the Ugandan school system does not address such as sexual health, body image, safe sex, puberty, respecting women and relationships. We work with Straight Talk Foundation, a non governmental organisation in Uganda. We send teams of volunteers to Uganda every summer to teach adolescents and children at schools across the country through short educational plays, Q&A sessions and 1 to 1 advice. The project aims to tackle myths and misinformation about sexual health and HIV, which are rife in the country.

Straight Talk Foundation has been instrumental in the reduction of the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Uganda, with the result that the country is hailed as one of Africa’s most successful in combating the HIV/AIDS pandemic. 30% of Ugandans had HIV in the 1980s, but through the work of the Straight Talk Foundation and similar charities this was reduced to just 6% in 2008
