Grand Depart Classic 2019 · 29 June 2019

Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition - to stop men dying from prostate cancer. Through shifting the science over the next 10 years to focus on radical improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and support, we will stop prostate cancer being a killer.

Story

In 2014 Dad, (Bob) was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer for which he continues to receive treatment. The charity has become a great support and involved us in some brilliant events.

Sport and fitness has enabled the whole family to focus our efforts in a positive way since Bob's diagnosis. In 2014 Rob ran the London Marathon, followed by me in 2015 and then Beth and Rob in 2016 and Justin in 2018!

Beth managed to convince Bob to join the first Grand Depart Classic... with no bullying he signed up again for 2017. Since then the family have continued to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK and other charities through marathons, (as above) and many half marathons with this year marking Bob’s 4th Grand Depart Classic for PCUK.

Collectively we have raised over £20,000 for cancer charities in recent years and really want to keep adding to this.

Last year it was Beth’s intention to ride the 2018 event starting in Noirmoutier and cycling the 189 km first stage of the Tour de France stage to Fontenay Le Comte. However, after becoming pregnant in the early stages of training, Rob stepped up to the plate to form Team Wilson Connelly and Bobby was born on 12th December 2018.

This year the team name can remain the same but is made up of Bob and me (a cycling newbie!) On Saturday 29thJune, we will take on the Grand Depart Classic, 190km around Brussels incorporating many iconic cycling locations (including a number of somewhat scary cobbled sections!) Hir’l, Beth and Bobby will be acting as a support crew on route with Rob and Justin fielding things back home.

Prostate Cancer affects one in eight men, research is needed to prevent further families hearing the dreaded news. All money raised will go directly towards finding early diagnosis and intervention and different treatments.

As a family we continue to be so proud of Bob for taking on these huge challenges and becoming brilliant at cycling - I just hope I can keep up with him! Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
