Story

Ellie is 11yrs old and was born blind. Everyday she works hard to achieve alongside her peers, which often means working harder for the same goal.

Ellie has always struggled having the motivation to move, with independent movement being the most challenging. Subsequently, she has very low levels of fitness and as such has decided to take on the enormous personal challenge of completing a 5k run for charity. This will be an absolutely humongous achievement for not only Ellie, but also myself (Kate) having never run for any length of time previously. We are both already running longer than we ever have done after only four weeks of training.

We have chosen RNIBs double dash run to raise valuable funds to allow the RNIB to continue providing services. Ellie uses the RNIBs audiobook library and has quite literally borrowed thousands of books over the years! It costs £1,500 to produce just one talking book, it would be amazing if we could raise this amount. Ellie also has a monthly audio magazine subscription (National Geographic Kids) that she absolutely loves, and also uses the RNIBs braille music library, providing music that she requires for piano, recorder and oboe in a format she can access. All of these services are provided with no cost to Ellie.

We will keep you updated with our progress, and look forward to our challenge on the 7th May!

About the charity

Every day 250 people in the UK start losing their sight. With your help, we can be there when people need us most, support independent living, create an inclusive society and prevent avoidable sight loss. Every pound you raise will help create a future where sight loss is no longer a barrier.
