Three Open Water Swims · 26 May 2014

We provide long term, effective, sustainable support to 30 physically disabled children at the New Life Centre in Nepal and with virtually no administrative costs. The children usually come from remote and mountainous areas where life for a disabled child is particularly difficult and there is very little medical help or access to education. Disability may occur due to a variety of reasons but often because of untreated accidental injuries and severe burn injuries as a result of babies and young children being left unattended with open cooking fires while their parents work the land. We work closely with the children and staff at the centre assessing their needs and liaising with the local board members of the centre about the best way we can help. The main focus of our support is a commitment to provide a new home which will help the centre save a third of its budget for rent to use for other important expenses. We also help with other essential day to day costs. We liaise with other Nepali and foreign donors of the centre to ensure a web of integrated support that minimises reliance on any one agency alone, thus guaranteeing on going medical care, a caring home, a healthy diet, good education, as well as post school training and further study where appropriate.

Story

Nearly ten years ago I challenged myself to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, a challenge that pushed me to the limit physically and emotionally and helped me raise £8000 for my chosen charity.  Time has flown by, and since then I have had twins (now aged 7) and my eldest boy is going on 11.  I have been thinking for a while that it is time for a new challenge (and time to get fit again!) so when I was asked by a friend to join a group taking part in three open water swims this summer, the challenge was set.

This time around I am thrilled to be raising money for the Nepali Children’s Trust, which is a charity I have had an association with for the last 10 years as my mother has been on the fund raising committee since its conception.  In that time the committee, based in and around Bristol, has organised many wonderful fundraising events enabling physically disabled Nepali children to be cared for and educated. In particular, the charity has provided funds for a purpose built, residential facility for children at the New Life Centre (DNC) in Kathmandu. In May 2011 the new premises opened its doors and now accommodates 40 disabled children and staff in a modern and spacious building.

I hope to raise at least £3000 to help fund the ongoing work at the New Life Centre.  Please see their website for more detailed information:  www.nepalichildrenstrust.com/disabled-newlife-centre-dnc/

I am part of a group called 'The Welsh Whales' and we will be undertaking the following three swims:

11th May  Wye River Swim - 2km (including 500m upstream)

1st June   Windsor Swim in the Thames - 3km

20th July   Hampton Court Swim from Hampton Court Bridge to Kingston Bridge - 3.62km

Training has started and it will be tough, but it will be worth it.  Please do give as much as you can for this extremely worthwhile cause.  I will be updating regularly on this site, Facebook and Twitter.

Many, many thanks

Kate
