If you know me personally, you'll probably also know of Gramps. He's a bit of a hero of mine!
Before covid and the resulting lockdowns hit, Gramps was a regular on the volunteer scene.💅He used to drive "old people" (his words, not mine) to medical appointments, despite them being years younger than him, and would always make time for a cup of tea and a chat before taking them home. He worked at a couple of local charity shops, helped out with events for the Blind Society and has generally just been an angel of a man and a real role model to myself and my siblings.💖
Unfortunately Gramps was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a couple of years ago, and my family and I have been trying to keep him living independently for as long as possible.
I work part-time to help out with his care, some days it feels like an absolute treat and a privilege to be able to spend so much time with him, but sometimes it's also incredibly difficult... and on the days where it's not so great, I've looked to places like the Alzheimer's Society for support and guidance on how best to handle his condition.
Gramps has spent his life giving back to his local community, his country (he's a WWII vet!) and his family. I wanted to do something a bit out there on his behalf! So I've entered the Manchester Marathon... which is a very, very long run, as he keeps reminding me.🙄
If you'd like to donate please know that your donations to the Alzheimer's Society not only help the people living with the disease, but also the family members that help to support them.
Thanks for reading & wish me luck!🍀
