SimplyHealth Great North Run 2018 · 9 September 2018 ·

SMA is a genetic disease that affects motor neurones. 1:40 of us is a carrier and in its most severe form children rarely live beyond 2 – making SMA the leading genetic cause of death in babies and toddlers. The SMA Trust is solely dedicated to funding research into a cure and treatments for SMA

Story

Thank you so much for taking time to read my page...

For some crazy reason this year I have decided to run the Great North Run, all 13.1 miles 😱 with my lovely friend Lauren. I’m not aiming for a time, I aim to enjoy the experience as much as I can, ache while training, ache for a week after, have a laugh and a good celebratory drink after. This run is not just about raising money, it’s to celebrate the end of my midwifery training...so those tears at the end will be of achievement, heartache, blood, sweat (and all the other bodily fluids we as midwives ask for) and damn hard work! I’d love it if people could come and celebrate with us afterwards.

I am raising money for a charity close to my heart and would be really greatful for any donations to support the research and upcoming successful treatment of SMA (spinal muscular atrophy) which is the biggest cause of death for under 2’s. Identification is often misdiagnosed  which can delay potential treatment.

I am specifically running in memory of our family friend Rowan who sadly passed away aged 18m, she is now the face of the SMA Trust and I hope I can do Team Rowan proud with what I raise.
