Kate's Sit up for The Sick Children's Trust

Kate Tyminska is raising money for The Sick Children's Trust

Sit up for The Sick Children's Trust · 7 April 2021

The Sick Children’s Trust is the charity that gives families with a seriously ill child in hospital a comfortable place to stay and a friendly ear to listen in one of our ten ‘Homes from Home’. By providing families with somewhere to stay near their child they have one less thing to worry about.

This time 10 years ago we'd just come home with my eldest son, Beau, aged 9 weeks. He was still quite a poorly little boy after a month long battle in hospital fighting group B strep meningitis and sepsis but at this point we were just glad to have him home as we were told we might not get to take him home when he spent his first night on life support, miles away from home in Sheffield Children's Hospital.

I was still recovering from a traumatic emergency cesarean and a badly broken leg when Beau was admitted by the specialist recovery team at just 4 weeks old.

His father and I spent the first two weeks roughing it on a single camp bed on the ward and taking it in turns to sleep in the chair at his bedside.

One day the manager of Treetop House, the home from home accommodation within the hospital, run by the amazing Sick Children's Trust came to find us to tell us she could offer us a room.

The utter relief we felt as we packed up all our worldly goods, clothing, towels, dirty washing and food supplies was unbelievable.

The feeling of finally having somewhere we could shower, do laundry, prepare a proper meal, recharge our batteries and sleep was just immeasurable.

It costs the Sick Children's Trust £30 per night to put up a family and yet they offer this fabulous service completely free of charge to families of sick children in hospitals up and down the country. Not only is it a practical solution at what can be one of the hardest times a family will ever face but, the emotional support that comes with it is just invaluable, not just from the staff but from the other families who are all staying there, facing the same challenges together. It is literally life saving.

I've always tried to do my bit to continue to support some of the fabulous charities that helped us through the most difficult time of our lives.

It's been about 5 years since I've done anything for this particular charity so when I saw the Sit Up for the Sick Children's Trust challenge pop up on my newsfeed about a month ago, I thought 'why not?'

As a result of his fight with meningitis, Beau, now age 10 was left with an acquired brain injury. He has a rare type of cerebral palsy, he's visually impaired and has complex learning difficulties. Beau is largely non-verbal. He cannot feed, wash or dress himself independently. He relies on me completely to meet all his care needs. Although we have recently managed to secure a few hours a week so he can have a carer which is a huge help to us all.

Thankfully Beau isn't medically complex and his default setting is happy. He's an absolute joy to be around but physically and emotionally it can be tough so I try to keep myself fit in order for me to be able to manage his care myself for as many years as possible.

During lockdown its been impossible to get out running which I rely on to keep my mental health in good order and maintain my physical condition. With things starting to get back to normal now I'm back out running when I can and thought the sit up challenge would be a great addition to that, something to keep me motivated and a brilliant way to help this amazing charity.

I'm hoping to be able to try and complete my sit ups in various locations to keep it fun and interesting for the people who are following my challenge on my Facebook page.

Beau's younger brother Dexter, who is 7, is in charge of filming my efforts but also likes to get involved by doing some sit ups beside me too sometimes which is a huge support and inspires me to keep going. Both boys inspire me daily to be the best that I can be and to teach them that being active and healthy is a normal part of life.

So far we've raised over £200 in under a week. It equates to about £1 per sit up at this point. It sets the bar high but I figure if we can stir up enough support I hope to be able to maintain that and by the end of April, when I've completed 900 sit ups, I'd like to be able to say that I've still raised £1 for each one what I've done!

Every time I set up a fund raiser I'm genuinely shocked and overwhelmed when the money starts to immediately come in. Beau is a hugely popular and charismatic little boy and I always think this is reflected in the donations that we get for our charities.

I know everyone's had a really tough year but even if people can only spare us £1 to sponsor just a single sit up it will all add up to a fantastic amount for this vital charity and will enable them to continue supporting families just like us, as they face some of the most incomprehensibly difficult times.
