Our second daughter, Isabella, was born in August 2022, however she was incredibly poorly at birth and spent the first week of her life on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St Michael's. The staff were absolutely incredible and looked after her amazingly well, whilst all we could do was simply sit, watch, wait and pray for her to breathe on her own.
Matt and I were surprised to see just how much of the equipment was funded by Cots for Tots and it was at that point, we knew we wanted to help raise funds to ensure that other families benefit from the equipment that was saving our daughter's life.
We also came to realise how fortunate we were to have access to this life saving equipment in the city that we live in, but we met many families from all over the west country, whose children needed the specialist care at St Michaels. These families were able to benefit from the Cots for Tots House, which we can only imagine how important that must have been for them, and we hope that the money raised will ensure this invaluable service continues.
As well as this, we were touched by the 'Miniboo' comforters, journals, and books to support older siblings. All of this, provided by Cots for Tots, helped our family at a really scary time in our lives.
Isabella gave it everything in those early days in order to breathe, and so this half marathon seems like a manageable challenge in comparison to what she went through.
That being said, as many of you will know, I am not a runner and haven't ever taken part in any running events - so this could be quite a struggle! I am currently working my way through 'Couch to 5km' and will then gradually work towards this half marathon! I will let you know how I am getting on.
Cots for Tots is the special care baby charity raising money to save and transform lives at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St Michael’s Hospital Bristol, and Cots for Tots House, free 'home from home' accommodation for families of babies from Bristol, the South West, South Wales and beyond.
