Story
So...I'm going trekking! I'm doing a 5 day trek of a remote area of the Great Wall of China to raise funds for an amazing charity, 'Fountain of Peace, Children's Foundation UK' based in Uganda.
I first found out about the charity when I met Peace (the founder) at a church in Tunbridge Wells and heard her truly inspirational story about growing up as an orphan in Uganda and the fine line between life and death. For Peace the fine line took her to a Christian organisation which gave her an education and a life founded in God. And it is her faith that has led her to setting up a charity of her own. Based in Kyenjojo, 200 miles west of Kampala, the charity is committed to transforming the lives of orphaned and abandoned children in the area, giving them a home, education and hope for the future, all within the context of a loving Christian environment. Since I heard Peace speaking back in February, I've been wanting to do something to help the charity and the Great Wall of China kept popping up everywhere, so I started looking into it...my original plan was to do a trek that was specifically organised for charity fundraising but the one I wanted to do isn't running anymore, so instead I'm joining a group open to anyone wanting to do something slightly adventurous! This gives me a lot more flexibility. It means I can fundraise for my own charity, I'm not tied into any fundraising targets, and also means I can self- fund the entire trip so that everything I raise will go directly to this amazing organisation, and not to the cost of getting there.
So what will I be doing- the trek will be along original sections (rather than restored sections) of the Great Wall, far from the tourist trail. It's spread over 5 days and involves 5-8 hours trekking each day. I, along with the rest of the group, will be going back to basics - camping in rural villages (amazing!), cooking on open campfires (under the stars!) 'showering' with a bowl of water (love it!) and simply experiencing the real China. I absolutely cannot wait, and God has blessed me with the funds and time to make it work! And who knows what else when I get out there (God always has a plan! :-))
My trip isn't until October and I would love to be able to raise a significant amount of money so that it really makes a difference to the work going on in Uganda.
A huge huge thank you in advance for any support you can offer, no matter how small, it all counts!
