Royal Parks Half Marathon 2015 · 11 October 2015 ·

We work to: (1) empower patient groups to build their patient community, develop as a charity, and drive treatment research; and (2) promote collaboration between rare disease stakeholders to facilitate treatment development for all.

Story

Hello all :)

I'm running the Royal Parks Half in October to raise money for Findacure - a charity which supports patient groups living with ultra rare diseases & funds research into these conditions. Friends & family from the last few years will be aware I'm having my own little tussle with a rather unique but not particularly beautiful snowflake of a condition, and Findacure's commitment to patient support, the raising of awareness & driving development of clinical trials to further treatments is a commitment of which I am a big fan.

So, I'm running a half marathon for a great cause, and hopefully going to smash it in a more respectable time than I last ran this distance sometime in 2013, although making no promises on that one.If you can find 50p to chuck my way to help me towards my fundraising goal I will be so grateful, as will Findacure who are the ones doing all the actual hard work.

Massive massive thanks to anyone and everyone who can help me on my way over the next nine months or so to raise some much needed cash for this brilliant charity. You're all (in advance) wonderful and if we manage to smash the target I will run it in a Nicholas Cage patterned morph suit or something. Game on. Thank you & so much love X x x x

To find out a little bit more about Findacure & the work they do, read on , and maybe visit their website - http://www.findacure.org.uk/

Though the range of diseases Findacure supports research into are called 'rare', in total they are thought to affect 3.5 million people in the UK. There is a chronic lack of support for rare diseases, and most patient groups are run by patients themselves, or their families. Very few have treatments. Findacure teaches patient groups how to organise clinical research and drive the development of treatment into their conditions.

To overcome the neglect of rare diseases in the research field, Findacure has coined the term of ‘fundamental diseases’ to stress their importance - because studying rare diseases is often crucial to understanding common conditions.
