There are 14.7million people – that’s more than one in six – in the UK living with a neurological condition. Here at the country's leading neurological centre, we’re passionate about supporting the hospital to help improve the lives of patients through treatment and research.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Rare Dementia Support (RDS) is a UK based charity that works to support people affected by five rare dementia conditions including Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD).

Many of you may know that my Mum was diagnosed with FTD in 2016 at the age of 63.  At the very time of her life when she should have been starting to enjoy retirement, travelling and spending time with her children and grandchildren, dementia has taken away large parts of the person we know.  It is such a cruel disease with no cure, no treatment and no prospect of either.

Very little is known about the causes of the disease, and this is what the National Brain Appeal are researching.  Rare Dementia Support provides support to the carers, family and friends of those affected, and it is fully funded by the National Brain Appeal.  All of the money raised by me will go to Rare Dementia Support.

I'm aiming to raise at least £2000, and whatever I raise will be matched by my employer, so your donation is worth double :)  any amount will be gratefully received by the charity and appreciated by sufferers of rare dementia and their families.

More about FTD:

FTD is a form of dementia predominantly affecting cognitive functions such as behaviour and personality, with relatively few memory problems at the outset.  It is a group of conditions caused by loss of cells mainly in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. The main symptoms are a progressive change in personality and behaviour or progressive deterioration in language abilities.

It can affect both men and women and usually starts in the 40’s, 50’s or 60’s. However it can also affect older people, and rarely, even younger people.
